The 8th Asian International Economic Law Network Conference 2023: The New Generation of Economic Agreements in the Asia Pacific

Prof. Dr. Yetty Komalasari Dewi participated as a speaker at The 8th Asian International Economic Law Network Conference, held on 1–2 December 2023 at National Taiwan University, Taipei. The conference was jointly organised by the Asian Center for WTO & International Health Law and Policy (ACWH) and the Asian International Economic Law Network (AIELN), bringing together scholars from more than ten countries to discuss the theme “The New Generation of Economic Agreements in the Asia Pacific.”

The conference discussions highlighted a shifting approach in international economic law, where trade and investment agreements increasingly integrate public policy objectives, sustainability, and long-term development, rather than focusing solely on market liberalisation.

In the panel Sustainability in International Economic Laws, Prof. Yetty presented her paper entitled “Export Restrictions: Promoting Sustainable Investment and Downstreaming Extractive Industries.” The presentation examined export restrictions as a strategic policy instrument to support sustainable investment and strengthen downstream extractive industries, positioning trade policy as part of a broader regulatory framework aimed at long-term economic development.

The session also featured Rizky Banyualam Permana, who discussed the ASEAN way in facilitating trade and sustainable development. The presentation emphasised consensus, flexibility, and gradual integration as key characteristics of ASEAN cooperation in responding to regional trade dynamics and development challenges.

At the same institution, National Taiwan University, Prof. Dr. Yetty Komalasari Dewi was invited as a guest lecturer in the ASEAN and Southeast Asia Law Series on 4 December 2023. She delivered a lecture entitled “Indonesian Investment Law: Progressing Forward,” addressing recent developments and future directions of Indonesia’s investment law framework. The lecture formed part of an academic forum aimed at enriching discussions on legal developments in Southeast Asia within the context of regional and international economic dynamics.
